The Ministry of Education and Culture has selected Karelia University of Applied Sciences as on of the Higher Education Institutions responsible for supporting Immigrants in integration. The aim is to give guidance to immigrants to help them to find suitable studying possibilities and produce services for recognising the prior competence of highly educated immigrants in order to facilitate the process of integration.

The service is named as SIMHE (Supporting Immigrants in Higher Education). National SIMHE network includes Universities of Helsinki, Turku and Jyväskylä and Universities of Applied Sciences of Metropolia, Oulu and Karlia. These Higher Education Institutes have given SIMHE services from 2017 and year 2019 also Savonia University of Applies Sciences and Tampere University and University of Applied Sciences joined the activities.

SIMHE services at Karelia UAS include counselling and guidance, educational paths and workshops to highly educated immigrants. Guidance can be individual or group guidance.

SIMHE-Karelia guidance service can

  • give study and career guidance for those Immigrants who have done their previous Higher Education abroad and would like to do complementary studies in Finland
  • give career guidance for those Highly Educated Immigrants, who want to find new study and career options in Finland
  • to help Immigrants in recognition of academic qualifications process
